Rumours and Fungus

After the rescue of the Dwarven Waystation’s patrons, time was spent recovering. The party gathered many rumours with judicious use of Investigation and Persuasion.

Aim discovered that the ‘Damned Vengeance’ the Cult of the Burning Blade were seeking was a Legendary Weapon, rumoured to be the only such weapon capable of killing the Demon Lord Nagarash.

A Egland merchant who had recently visited Depool asks for a quiet work with the Farondai, telling him he is grateful for his rescue, and wishes to reward him with the information that Lord Maer has sent word to a group of bounty hunters from Tabrygc, telling them to travel south west and ambush the rogue on the old dwarf road.

A member of Lock’s church tells her she got word of an old temple to their god being discovered along the Llangar river. It needs clearing out and rededicating to the religion.

A Collimong alchemist is furious that his bodyguards fled the instant they were freed from the cocoons. He now needs an escort to explore some nearby caves in the foothills of the Gabizar Crags and gather some rare ingredients.

A member of Lock’s church tells her she got word of an old temple to their god being discovered along the Llangar river. It needs clearing out and rededicating to the religion.

The Dwarves would like to reopen an old watchtower along the river, to control the recent bandit activity, but strange lights have been seen at nights, and no scouts sent to investigate have returned.

Crazy rumours of a flying island, controlled by a group of lizard men, appearing in the skies of Lodorthob.

(it was decided the last one was a bit too silly to be true)

The Party decided Reed and the dwarven cleric would travel on to Aelbrygc to investigate rumours of the Cult of the Burning Blade being present in the town.

The rest of the party would head to Aelbrygc, but assist Speteoklo the alchemist in finding some fungus samples to make some gold on the way.

Travellling overland to the Crags, the party found the cave and went within.

The dwarf rogue Farondai scouted ahead and found three bandits, turned into zombie like creatures by a strange fungus. The party crept past them and head north.

To the north was a narrow channel heading upwards. The rogue crept inside and was seized by an unseen assailant. Barabar charged upwards, and Aim fired a ray of frost just in case, which hit whatever had taken the rogue.

The rest of the party climbed up the channel to discover the rogue in combat with a giant frog, with two large Quaggoth (bearlike humanoids) Spore Creatures shambling east towards them. Aim and Skie cast spells and injured the toad and one of the Quaggoths. Barbar attacked the toad then caught a glimpse of something in the distance, abandoned the party and ran off.

Skie used her lightning spell to explode the toad all over the cavern. Lock got inbetween the Quaggoths and cast Thunderwave, although the Quaggoths were not as hurt as she had hoped. The Quaggoths turned their attacks on her, mauling Lock with their fungoid claws (one getting a critical hit for maximum damage).

Aim missed twice with Ray of Frost. Lock wore the Quaggoths down, while Farondai rolled about doing extra damage with the Gnomish Frost Dagger he’d traded with Reed for the Silver Longsword. Finally, Lock killed the first Quaggoth, and Farondai stabbed the other one from behind. Their bodies collapsed into ooze, revealing a number of spell scrolls hidden within…

Izmock the Gnome

While Sky, Farondai and Barbar were battling the Spined Demon, Lock and Aim decided to explore the webbed areas of the eastern chamber. Barbar abandoned her colleagues and joined them.

Aim burned the webs to the north and discovered a stone sarcophagus, holding the ancient body of a Ratman, with the inscription ‘Here Lies Akrit’. By his body was a Thunderwave Staff and five Awakened Acorns. Aim resurrected one of the dead Giant Wolf Spiders as her companion.

To the south, they found half the missing travellers in cocoons. Lock and Aim freed them, and Reed and Dainna escorted them to the surface.

The party travelled west and then north. They found a chamber with many spider eggs and the remaining cocooned travellers. Skie and Farondai escorted them to the surface. Before they left, Lock healed some of the travellers, and persuaded them to give her a Shield of the Kraken and an Invisibility Potion.

To the south was a spiral staircase, leading down. The party decided to explore further.

The staircase took the party to a vast chamber, with a large monolith at the west end, topped with a beast’s skull. A green-haired gnome was hitting the monolith with his staff, turning it, and all the crystals in the cavern, a dark red. He introduced himself as Izmock, claimed the party’s souls for Nagarash and cast two Bonfires with his staff, blocking their line of sight.

Barbar threatened the gnome in Abyssal, which caused him to pee his pants a little, and summon a giant Demon Spider, which descended from the ceiling.

Aim sent her Wolf Spider to attack the Giant Spider. Lock drank a potion of Invisibility and snuck up on Izmock, although irritatingly he kept moving away.

Barbar attacked the Demon Spider with her scimitars and was Webbed.

Imock attacked Aim with a ray of sickness.

Barbar and the Wolf Spider slew the Demon Spider. Izmock tried to flee. Lock used the power of the Shield of the Kraken to yank him back, and an exchange of Thunder magic took place. Izmock made another attempt to flee and Lock killed him with a Lightning spell.

Among Izmock’s posessions the party found a note, reading:

Izmock – when you have corrupted the stone, travel to the town of Aelbrig and seek more information on Damned Vengeance. Only when it is destroyed can our Lord take his rightful place as ruler of this Realm. The Blade Must Burn.

This (and a strangely curved ritual dagger found on his body) suggests Izmock was a member of a Nagarash-worshipping cult: The Cult of The Burning Blade.

The party discovered three unconscious adventurers hanging from the ceiling in cocoons. When freed, they were revealed as: Barbar, a cute gnome fighter (with a surprising grasp of the demonic language of Abyssal), Aim, an elvish mage and trainee necromancer (determined to use her powers for good), and Lock, a pirate cleric, who immediately began assessing the worth of the collection of ancient skulls in the first room.

Bardbard, Aim and Lock joined the party.

Exploring south, the party discovered many strange mummified bodies. The dwarf rogue found a Silver Sword. They also found the body of a cleric, with a Rosewight Cloak and a staff of St. Dacre.

Exploring East, Barbar was caught in a web. Two giant wolf spiders attacked. Aim missed. Bardbard injured one. Lock mashed them both with her flail.

Barbar investigated an ancient forge and found a silver figurine of a raven.

Exploring West, the dwarf rogue Farondai briefly glimpsed a spiked shadow.

The party discovered the body of a wizard’s bodyguard, with a Grog’s Shield and a Scroll of Poison Spray. A Spined Demon attacked. Barbar attempted to communicate with it in Abyssal. This failed, but Farondai was able to use this distraction to sneak attack it with a crossbow. Reed shot it with his longbow.

Barbar wandered off an investigated a small treasure chest. She was poisoned by a trap.

The dwarf rogue and Skie were injured by the creature’s tail spines, but Farondai managed to finish it off with another crossbow attack.
